As a medium sized breed considered to be very friendly and good with kids, cats, etc. golden retrievers and yellow labs are very “safe” dogs for marketers to use, because smaller breeds are considered annoying and yappy by some and other larger dogs like pitbulls, dobermans, etc are “scary” in spite of being just as friendly. Personally, I’d like to see more mixed breeds in advertising. Also, I’ve noticed that when dogs are in ads for dog products like pet food the use of breeds is more diverse (like in the Purina ads), because the target audience is dog owners, while clothing ads, for example, stick with the “safe” breeds since the target customers may or may not love dogs.
Everyone loves black labs, but have you ever tried to take a picture of a super black dog? Just look at the picture for the blackest thing you can’t see.

All I can remember is the old Jeep Grand Cherokee ads where you took delivery of your SUV and your golden ‘Rex’

Collies may convey a negative implication that his/her family needs saving all the time (Lassie).

LL Bean always uses Labradors in its catalog photos… must have a tie-in to a breeder or something…
