if the universe is so far sighted, why is everyone around me so myopic?

@lohaces
Streisand may have sung it, but Allan Jay Lerner wrote the lyrics (& Burton Lane wrote the music) so the quote goes to them.

I can see Russia from my house. Snerk!

You live on Little Diomede? It amused me, in a gallows humor sort of way, how during the Cuban missle crisis, people panicked over “The Russians are 90 miles from us.” Big Diomede is three miles from Little Diomede, and there is a Russian naval base on it 12 miles away. In the winter, people walk across the ice to visit relatives. A little perspective, folks.

Jkissmya: I caught the joke. My geohistorical comment is strangely applicable even today. A few easily bombed missile instillations were nothing compared to a major naval base, yet which one caused the panic? At least a half-term governor’s lack of geographical awareness can be a joke now – in the recent (OK, my lifetime) past, it wasn’t. Indeed, a large number of US citizens still don’t recognize your line as a joke – and that frightens me.
