there is no “standard” dress or shoe size, never was. it varies according to the manufacturer, and sometimes within the manufacturer according to a particular line. you always have to try it on for fitting.
The latest “Below the Beltway” column has Gene Weingarten call up a clothing brand rep to ask why he’s still apparently a size 34 after all that weight gain. Surely they wouldn’t pull such a trick on men?!

… as a matter of fact, I just bought a belt that should fit, but apparently the manufacturer uses a different sized inch than the rest of us …

Wait until you run into “executive fit”. Now that’s vanity sizing. (It also has, alas, a certain practicality in our Zorgon-influenced world.)

Petite doesn’t refer to width but to height. You can have a “petite large” if you are overweight and short.

@Nabuquduriuzhur-you said: our sizes have shrunk in recent years. The size 2 dress of 20 years ago is smaller than the size 2 today.
those two sentences contradict each other. The first one would seem to deny “vanity sizing” while the second confirms it.
Therefore, I posit that your hat is too tight.:-D

So I guess the downsizing of Cracker Barrel cheese blocks, Coffee, toilet paper etc. is also called “Vanity Sizing”?

What do you call a small medium at large?
Sluggomatic over 12 years ago
They are doing the same thing with sodas and coffee. The old large is now the medium. Coincidence?
