I saw an Uyghur video clip where a guy in a phone booth is talking to his girlfriend and is taliong too much time. A long line begins to collect. In the background you can see shops with signs in Chinese and Arabic letters, which is how Uyghur is qeitten.
Finally the people in line, growing impatient, push him out. Despondent, he steals a cell phone from a little guy – a Han (ethnic Chinese) and continues wooing his beloved. The little Han gets the police to intervene. The police take “Casanova” to the police station where he asks to use the phone. He continues saying sweet nothings to his girlfriend. The police look at him as if he’s crazy.
Finally, “Casanove” finishes his conversation and holds out his hands to be cuffed. The police, admiring his ardency, brush him off and let him go.
The pay phone industry encouraged the success of the cell phones, ie by making them so expensive when you needed them most. Example: Some years ago I was at Lambert (St. Louis) and wanted to call home. The pay phones required apx $3 or more.On way home, stopped at a mall in Wentzville (Suberb) and made same call for 50c. Frequent travelers who had no choice, rapidly saw a bargain in cell phones when they became available!

Wonderful how etiquette used to work. People would queue politely to use the phone. Today someone would probably pull out a gun :P
