Whoa! I just realized Mammy Yokum is Popeye in drag. Look at the forearms, the squint, the jaw, the pugnacious attitude. It’s like Al Capp saw the Popeye strip and thought how could I take this character. Not that I have anything against the strip, it’s a classic, great artwork, great characters. But the original Popeye strips (Thimble Theater) stand above just about any other comic, IMHO, not that anyone asked me.
