Man: Boy, I wish we'd invested in gold back when it was cheap. Woman: As I recall, back when gold was cheap, we could barely afford the aluminum in our siding.
Yep…serious inflation. My uncle was making $40,000 back in ’86 and my aunt stayed home. They had 3 kids all in private school and then took on me and my sister. We never missed a meal and went to Disney World and other very cool trips every summer.
When my dad entered the Methodist ministry in 1925, minimum salary was $300 – per year. Thus the tradition of “poundings” – everyone contributed a pound of produce to enable the preacher to eat. Many hilarious anecdotes ensued – such as finding the kitchen full of live chickens.
Ah, yes, the 50’s. When my mother, a widow was bringing up me and supporting her mother (also a widow, and my “daycare”) and getting paid half as much as a man because “he has a family to support.” Gee. I wonder how I got politicized.
