At the very end of February, Beta Jane threw out the aphrodisiac (Sapphrodisiac?) pink pendant Jill got from the fortune teller……..But we never saw what happened after that, because March 1st, Paige stepped in to say she was working on a book….so we were stepping back in time…to an arc that turned out to be from 2002. Take a look…
I’m not sure exactly how long I’ve been reading Jane’s World, but a couple of months ago we reached the part I remember…and I never noticed a time jump.Internet cafes were still peaking in 2002….but Twitter was NOT around yet.Did the strip jump forward half a dozen years somehow…. and I missed it?Or Paige, did you re-do the dialogue to make it sound more like 2012?
It might be a problem for Maggie, if this is now set after Twitter became popular, because smartphones, cheaper laptops, netbooks and free WiFi had started killing off actual internet cafes in the U.S. Anybody got a clue?
Busted! I updated the last panel to say “twitter.” Good eye, Susan! It’s really interesting that in terms of story, you used to have big technology jumps every 20 years (TV’s looked the same forever), then every 10 years and now, if you draw a computer, two years later your model looks dated.
Richard Thompson had a really funny observation, he said the more advanced technology gets, the less fun it is to draw.
I tested his theory with phones. I’ll post the image to the blog just for fun: http://www.pb9.com/blog
I checked out the drawing…. and yeah, Paige — nothing much to draw now…. BTW it’s really funny in old TV shows when they grab the huge cordless phone, like the quaint handset that once made Carrie look hip on Sex and the City….or especially if someone has a suitcase-size portable car phone.
Remember when Dick Tracy’s 2-way wrist radio was an enviable impossibility?

I made a point once for a sci-fi story of creating a computer complex that looked 50 years out of date, even thought the story was set at least 50 years in the future. (which probably made it 100 years out of date) But my feeling was, the way design changes, who knows what “the future” will really look like?

OK, now I’m confused.

BTW The archives here only go back to 2011 or I’d just check.
And the time-line is elastic cos the strip has been daily, bi-weekly and weekly at various times…. but still…
