On my toaster it’s a very fine difference in the setting between white and black. There’s only one spot on the entire dial that actually results in brown.
Totally agree with Calvin’s frustration with the toaster, especially since we’re on our third toaster in a week, trying to find ONE that toasts properly.
A toaster is a box, ejector assembly, heating element, temperature sensor, and maybe a timer. It sells for $7 – $20. A toaster with aircraft level sensors and redundancy would sell for $300, $25000 if built to NASA or MIL Spec.
Actually, when you consider the percentages, airplanes remain the safest way to travel. The media trumpets air crashes, but what if they spent hours everyday reporting all the “uneventful” flights. That would last for hours.
I remember getting on a plane, finding out which country this new plane was built in ,and promising my self to do a little reading when and if I got home.Because building anything was not what they were famous for.

Reminds me of when my brother, about Calvin’s age, decided toast would be much better if he buttered it before he put it in the toaster. Um, no.

Airplanes are a lot better serviced than toasters. They have to be. Toasters don’t kill hundreds at a time when they burn your toast.

I have to get on an airplane this morning. If my toast is burnt for breakfast, I’ll consider it a warning.

I have a toaster in my camper, its a wire frame the bread sits on over a metal disk that sits over the burner flame. It works great.
