Toggle: Whoa! Alex: Thanks, honey! B.D.: Alex, what are you doing done here? The groom is not supposed to see you! Alex: I don't believe in that, since this is as good as I get. I think the groom should have one final chance to back out. Toggle: Back... out? Alex: Chance over. Catch you at the altar!

Alex came, made the save, and is right back out of there – perfect timing. And they are a wonderful couple, even for cartoon characters.

I thought the last chance was when the man says “Speak now or forever hold your peace.” - Or maybe even when he asks “Do you … ?” “Marriage is an institution that requires commitment … like an insane asylum.” Apropos of nothing at all, I was reminded of a famous wedding that occurred here in Virginia in the 17th century. In 1687, the Rev. James Blair, who would soon become the founder of the College of William and Mary, was married to Sarah Harrison. During the ceremony, a well-attended event considering the prominence of the parties involved, there was a bit of a glitch. The the officiating minister, a Mr. Smith, instructed Ms. Harrison to repeat the vow to love, honor, and obey her new husband, she said “Love, Honor, but no Obey.” Mr. Smith stopped the ceremony and repeated his instruction two more times, but each time the young lady insisted “No Obey.” At last, rather than give it up all together, Mr. Smith finished the ceremony and married them. Nice to know there were young women with spirit even 325 years ago.

The bride and groom not seeing each other before the wedding is slipping away. Now wedding photographers like to get pictures of the wedding before the wedding if at all possible as once the wedding starts there is little time for posed photos other than the formals and many churches limit the time to get those (that and the waiting people at the reception).

Why did Leo call her in the first place?I agee with the posts above about the superstition. Also I’ve heard that at Jewish weddings, they meet with the rabbi before the ceremony and lift the veil to make sure there’s been no switch as in the Jacob -Leah/Rachel story. Can anyone confirm?

Alex looks good, but in real life daughters who look too much like their fathers kind of give me the heebie-jeebies. Of course, my daughter is a ringer for me. Maybe that’ll help chase off boys in 8 years. Probably not…

As good as she gets, Alex looks more like her mother and maternal grandmother. The way she’s usually drawn, she looks like her young Uncle Benjy (pre-Dr. Whoopee) in drag.

Thank God my daughter takes her good looks from her mother. Besides, she’d look funny with a handle bar mustache and goatee.

ALthough superstition is idiotic, one good reason not to see the bride right before the weding is to save that “whoa” for the meeting at the altar. Not a great reason but a cute one.

GT sometimes likes to play with the history of the strip. In the June 12 strip Joanie said that the Rev and her never dated; they went to Jeb Magruder lecture. Magruder was a Watergate conspirator. The Rev and Joanie went out in November 1972, after the Watergate break in but before the scandal blew wide open. The first date was to the Vespers. The second date was a stroll in the park, where they found themselves in the middle of a demonstration. Joanie broke it off before anything “serious” happened.
