Neither must be married, is all I can say.

…and no one wonders why the French Foreign Legion ever has to advertise — always wear my kepis blanc proudly!

@gmartin: Refuelling is theorically possible by sending fuel units in advance to softland on Mars. I’d be more worried about the inability of certain engineers to keep their metres and feet straight.

Not having to listen to any more of the asinine political ads would be enough to get me to volunteer!

I’ve always thought sending little old ladies into space would work out, they don’t mind staying in the house for weeks on end and when they get to the destination they can make cookies for the indigenous life forms

Hey Moe_the-cat…I’m a “little old lady” and my cookies might contain ingredients we can’t discuss here! :-)

I agree with the previous people who said they want to forgo around-the-clock election coverage!! Now’s the perfect time to go, before it gets any closer to fall.

Why would they need to land the fuel on the planet necessarily? Mars has considerably lower gravity than earth, so it’s conceivable a lander could depart from a mothership, much like the lunar landers, and return to orbit without a large multistage rocket. Fuel sent ahead to orbit Mars could refuel the main ship to get back to Earth.

Fuel will be obtained and processed on Mars itself for the astronauts return trip home.
