I’m so full of hate for this venomous woman“Unwed Mother” … I remember that comment about adoption, Mrs Henley! Why are you in Annie’s employment? Some warped idea about “helping” hopeless lost soul UNWED MOTHER? I haven’t had neighbours or landladies half as bigoted – & I live in India.
Annie sees Lila’s engagement as a sacrifice, which in some ways it IS.She doesn’t want to be the reason her mother gives up her romantic dreams for financial security. In fact, in HER mind, SHE will be the one to get rich and take care of Lila. It’s not financial support Annie was looking for, but a loving home, and she found it.
I am combined respecting and detesting Annie …… respect for being so incredibly resourceful …… detest for meddling in Lila’s life so underhandedly …There’s an old “trope” used in numerous shows, where one of the characters does something so incredibly dastardly and sly and mean and underhanded, but wins the day against the Villain of the Week … and one of the other characters will say, “I’m sure glad you’re on our side!”I’m not so sure I’d be glad to have Annie on mine.… but alas, it’s only a cartoon, and I’m over-analyzing …
I have mixed feelings. Manipulation and deception are not behaviors I’d like to see encouraged, but it could be argued that the end justifies the means. Apparently the strip’s fans approve.

So Annie decided to deal with the situation by her own… Not bad, like always! Reasons to do it are still on the air yet.

What a surprise. Here I thought the neighbor was just a busybody getting in Lila’s way, never suspected Anne.
