admission was a lot cheaper too!my sister & I used to go to one. we’d stop first and each buy a box of fried chicken w/drinks and once we got here & the windows were down you could smell that wonderful smell of chicken for a few rows around us. People would walk by with their popcorn but we all knew they wanted what we were having… GOOD food!! We actually went to see a movie too!
There was a drive-in close to where I was young. An enjoyable place it was. Now the place is converted to an old folks (oops), I mean, retirement community. I presume the ramps are still in use though.
I remember seeing Disney’s BEDKNOBS & BROOMSTICKS. Always liked the concession stand ad with the marching bag of popcorn, soda and hot-dog etc. We had two drive-ins. One is now a school campus and the other is a huge church grounds.
$2.00 a carload and we would take a grain truck and fill it full of miscreants like ourselves, turn it around and all watch from the back. My first taste of peach snapps and another bushy illegal substance, was at the Sunset Drive In in Amarillo Texas…
My wife and I sat on lawn chairs and the kids had their sleeping bags – all in the bed of my truck. After the movie, the kids were sound asleep as we drove home – they remained in the bed all the way. And, everyone lived… oh the beautiful miracle of it.
Some drive-ins charged by the car and others charged by the head, sooooo….Dad would have a couple of us lie on the floorboards behind the back seat and cover up with a blanket. It probably was 25 cents a kid. My brother and I thought we were really getting away with something. I don’t think we were THAT poor, but Dad was Scottish and hated to part with a dime if he didn’t have to.
I also remember changing parking spots several times to get a speaker that worked……and dads not letting their teen daughters go with a date that drove a Nash Rambler, because (gasp) the seat could be lowered down flat.
Haven’t been to a drive-in since I was a teenager. We went a few times as a kid, but my favorite memories are when I would stay at my grandparents. They lived up the hill from the drive-in and I would sit on the porch and watch the movies. I would make up my own dialog and entertain myself. It was a hoot.
Some charged by the carload, others per person (and they watched for trunk opening inside). My first year in college, I went to the town drive in and stopped at the ticket window, “How much for bicycles?” It was a per person drive-in, but I did get an interesting reaction.
Part of the reaction was because it was two miles out of town, and adults simply didn’t ride bicycles in those days. Eisenhower’s cardiologist changed that a half decade later.

just don’t order a rack of ribs as big as your car; the car will capsize.

We still have three near Charlotte that we regularly go to. Belmont Drive-in, Shelby Drive-in and Bessemer City Drive-in. It’s always a good time!

Have a few near Syracuse, NY (within driving distance). Miss going on “movie dates” and missing the movie.

there were 2, if memory serves me in the Syracuse area. One in Dewitt and the one in N. Syracuse. Went to both of them depending on what was playing.

The first time I saw John Wayne in “The Green Berets” was at a drive-in. I haven’t been to one in decades.

We still have a drive-in theater in Belleville, Illinois. And yes, it still has a playground for the kids.
