Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for July 04, 2012
Transcript:
Dill: I've been running around with this bag on for days practicing! There'd better be a potato sack race. OOF. Alice: Watch it, Dill! Petey, Mom told me to give you this hambur - HEY! Alice: Why are you sitting with that bucket-head? Petey: Him? He's not a buh - Mother: Here you are, Kevin! A big plate of potato salad! Kevin: OH BOY! Petey: Eeeugh - I couldn't get away from that buckethead fast enough - HEY! This hamburger is covered with ketchup! Alice: Oops, I guess I ate yours. So that one's mine - give it. I'm still hungry.

Just another typical day in the wonderful world of Alice and friends.

Yes it is. BTW, Happy 4th of July, everyone!

With every day that passes, I come to sympathize more with Petey’s dislike of the picnic on a metaphysical level. Could things get much worse for him? —Wait until tomorrow!

Well I don’t see what’s wrong with potato salad, but it’s just plain wrong to put ketchup on burgers or dogs.

I love this strip; the diminutive Alice with the large appetite and Petey with all his foods fads! Mothers of the world unite!

Happy Independence Day, America! Long may you thrive and be thankful for the wonderful country you live in even if you are going through tough times right now. You still have freedom of speech; wish we had.

Don’t forget, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance”. And that goes for freedom of speech, as well as for potato salad …

Not only does potato salad involve foods touching, but I seem to remember Petey having something against mayonnaise?

Especially ones lacking beer.

Somehow this particular strip makes me uncomfortable. Petey rejects poor Kevin with whom he has been chatting comfortably because he is identified as a bucket-head, Alice gives Petey a burger he can’t eat and then demands it back to satisfy her greed, Dill is lost in a potato bag…I identify with all of them! Neurotic Petey, greedy Alice, misunderstood Dill and lonely Kevin! Richard! Do something about this sad state of affairs. Please…

Ketchup/Catsup is only good on fried potatoes. And at that, you need to add some Habanero sauce.
Okay, you can put some, sparingly, on the top of a meatloaf.

I didn’t notice Alice’s head- turn in the first panel the first time I read the strip. Good thing I went back to savor it again! -

I’m with you, Petey. Ketchup is DISGUSTING!!!!!!And because (I’m assuming) this strip takes place in the US, Kevin should have the right to eat as much potato salad as he wants, Petey has the right to call him a buckethead (though it’s still not very nice) and to reject the burger with the ketchup, and Alice has the right to ask for the burger back (although this is rude as well). All these rights are wonderfully granted in our first amendment! YAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!! Happy Fourth, everyone! And be thankful your Independence Day picnic is NOTHING like Blisshaven’s!!!!!!!! ;P

Feel the love between the Bucketheads. Ain’t it grand?

I tried to post this earlier today, but it didn’t post: Gilda 92, I think that Petey abandoned Kevin because Kevin likes potato salad – lots of it. Also, from Richard T.’s perspective, it might have been too complicated for him to work a deep Petey-Kevin friendship into his story arcs.

Yup, Just NOT ketchup. It belongs in the garbage.

Petey didn’t care about “buckethead” until he saw him happily take potato salad… thus betraying the beautiful camaraderie they had been having
