Most old wives’ tales are total BS (like handling a baby bird will make its mother abandon it…nope, birds don’t care if their chicks have reeky human stank!), but yes, most of the superstitions, like walking a ladder (which usually has something at the top…yay gravity!) or breaking a mirror (back from when mirrors cost a small fortune) are to deter stupidity or keep the really expensive luxuries in tact :)
Now, if you walk under a ladder behind a black cat on Friday the 13th as you knock over a mirror, which breaks and spills salt, because you saw an owl. . .

I have a black cat. She’s a right b!#ch but she’s never brought bad luck. We also live at #13…. maybe it cancels out.
