Alice: Look at this! Isn't it great? Help me pull it up! Dill: Why? Alice: I'll give it to my mom! *GRUNT* She'll love it! Dill: Better slap the bugs off. Alice: Years from now, when I've done something really awful, Mom'll look back on how I gave her this giant flower and think how I'm wonderful, deep down. Dill: Wow! Planning ahead! I never do stuff like that!

Actually Mom will look back and remember all the bugs in the house.

WOW! Alice has the foresight of a much older person—say, even a six-year-old! (But I am disturbed by what appears to be a purple sunflower.)

A poisonous flower?

That is a weed, however a pretty one at that. Alice’s mom should appreciate the jester.

Well you probably don’t get in half the trouble that Alice does, Dill, but you should start thinking about planning ahead.

I think I remember this arc. Alice takes it home, freaks out Petey, puts it in the center of the dining room table…

Whoa, I thought it was one of those prickly stalked weeds! This gag could have gone in another direction if it was.

Sort of looks like a sunflower, they did get a lot of ants on them. I wonder how happy mom will be?

A weed is any plant you don’t want in your garden.
annesolt over 12 years ago
Yes, a weed is a volunteer. If this is a Scotch thistle, a prickly, invasive plant. Alice has just removed an unwanted volunteer..

Looks like something out of the movie “The Day of the Triffids”.
If it starts shooting out spores…RUN!

Hey Alice, isn’t that the prize-winning purple sunflower Mom was growing for the plant show?
water_moon over 12 years ago
No, the horticultral definition of a weed is any plant growing where it’s not wanted. My grandmother would use corn cobs for multch, and the corn plants growing in her rose garden were weeds. Grass in the cracks of your driveway are weeds. .With that in mind, as far as small children are concerned, if it’s got a flower, it can’t be a weed ;)
