WOW! Alice has the foresight of a much older person—say, even a six-year-old! (But I am disturbed by what appears to be a purple sunflower.)

A weed is any plant you don’t want in your garden.

Yes, a weed is a volunteer. If this is a Scotch thistle, a prickly, invasive plant. Alice has just removed an unwanted volunteer..

Looks like something out of the movie “The Day of the Triffids”.

No, the horticultral definition of a weed is any plant growing where it’s not wanted. My grandmother would use corn cobs for multch, and the corn plants growing in her rose garden were weeds. Grass in the cracks of your driveway are weeds. .With that in mind, as far as small children are concerned, if it’s got a flower, it can’t be a weed ;)
