When I was 21, I was playing volleyball with some people – one of which was a woman about 35 at the time. She made a great shot. I responded with, “Way to go big Debbie!” That didn’t go over well. I learned a valuable lesson that day and haven’t forgotten it.

He needs to be taught some manners!

I thought the point was that Nelson was totally unaware of the insult.

She’s an old lady, for heaven’s sake. Grandma’s are supposed to be soft and huggable. Nelson just needs to be taught how to be more diplomatic. Maybe he doesn’t realize that he hurt Opal’s feelings. Earl could stand some lessons on this too. If Opal is sometimes rude to him, you must consider what she has to deal with every day. That’s the main premise to the comic strip here. Even though they rag on each other all the time, Opal and Earl really love each other. They have stayed together all these years, despite all their faults and the daily grind—a good lesson for us all.

Be thankful that’s not Earl telling her that!
