But cats always land on their feet – what’s so shocking about this?

Kali, 19 stories is a long drop. Although according to the article, cats do this all the time. Boston Globe: http://articles.boston.com/2012-03-23/metro/31225766_1_cats-fall-stories

Didn’t say if the cat walked away from the fall or was all crippled up. Just says he survived.

When things happen unexpectedly, sometimes it seems that a cat has to ‘wing it’!

Someone once did a study on number of floors dropped vs survival rate of cats. It seems they survived well up to about the 3d floor, then the rate went down at 4th but picked up again until a certain level where the survival rate went down and down as heighth increased.Apparently, after a certain heighth, they were able to maneuver around to land feet first, but above that, even feet first was of no value. The author received a lot of hate mail for her efforts. It seems they THOUGHT she had taken a bunch of cats and dropped them from various heights!!Actually, she did this research from Veterenarian Records, etc.So, she harmed no cats in her research.

I suspect the “terminal velocity” of a cat in free-fall is much less than the 120 mph for a free-falling human?

A fall never hurt anyone. It’s that sudden decelleration at the bottom that gets to you.
