Put powdered cayenne pepper in with the birdseed. Birds are immune to capsicum, so it won’t hurt them and squirrels will quickly learn to not eat the birdseed
“Put powdered cayenne pepper in with the birdseed. Birds are immune to capsicum, so it won’t hurt them and squirrels will quickly learn to not eat the birdseed”
In a desperate attempt to get more use out of her backyard, my wife begged me to contact one of the mosquito control companies that she had heard about. Being afraid of chemicals and concerned about the environment, I was pleased to learn one of them uses a very concentrated garlic spray which we have used three times so far this summer. For the first time in the 30 years we’ve lived here we’ve had NO mosquitos. Our neighbors joined in with the same results, even tho local news is warning of mosquitos in the area, we only see them when we are at the parks or other folks’ houses. The bees, butterflies, and…sadly…the flies, are unaffected. The squirrels dont’ seem to mind the garlic as much as they do the goldendoodle puppy.peace.C.
As I type a squirrel is eating my neighbor’s tomato on the fence. The local paper says to hang bright red glass Christmas ornaments on the plants to change their minds about that. Tasty.
The next time you’re in San Francisco, go to the Stinking Rose. Their two slogans are “it’s chic to reek,” and “we season our garlic with food.” Fantastic food, but rumor has it that taxis refuse to pick people up from the restaurant.

Vicki’s garlic and pepper breath would have knocked that squirrel unconscious.

@C Downs: put something out that the birds can use as a birdbath, an inch or so deep is plenty. They’ll take care of your flies.
