That tour of the Great lakes sounds like something that I’d like to do. The Great Lakes Naval Base is located on lake Michigan. We used to anchor our boat near there, and go swimming.
Llewellen: I have toured the U-505, it is impressive. But what I want to relate, the last time I was in ORD, there was a blizzard going on, and flights were messed up as all get out.. We waited all day for a flight, and as pass riders, we thought we were going to have to stay anothe night there, but we finally not only got a flight to Atlanta, but got first class! Anyway, there were a bunch of young guys in dress sailor uniforms all over ORD, and they boarded our flight. During the weather delay mess taxiing out to the runway, the captain came onto the passenger address and informed us that we were carrying a lot of recent grads from the Great Lakes facility, and would we thank them for serving our country. The applause, coming from a plane full of weather delay P. O. ed passengers that had waited all day for the flight was deafening!! I am sure those sailors eill remember that flight forever. I was proud of my airline that night!!
Does anyone else remember Broomie’s reference to “that little old winemaker, me”? Italian Swiss Colony used to use a short chubby little guy in their commercials who claimed to be the winemaker. We toured that winery when I was a kid, and I swear the tour guide was the same guy from the commercial.
If you can find a copy of Adm. Dan Gallery’s book U505 it gives a first hand account of the capture of this Uboat. I loaned my copy out many years ago and never got it back :c(.

Now, Gaylord, don’t be cynical; you do still have all your tailfeathers. —At least for the moment. Don’t spoil the witch’s good mood.

In the case of some people, real and fictional, that’s the only way they can make peace.

Gaylord on the phone, “…Hello, CPS?” (Crow Protective Services). Yes, I know he is a buzzard. Who ever heard of BPS?

I toured the last Liberty ship Jerimiah O’Brien in San Francisco. Last I heard it was still operational.
