My parents are in their 80’s they were never Lawrence Welk fans I doubt anyone under 75 were Welk fans. Those people died 20 years ago. Now if PBS was showing The Stones concert at Altamont yeah, maybe…
cf: Today’s “New Adventures of Queen Victoria” and the defeat of the Zumba Apocalypse. Two cartoon references in one day? Not too shabby, Larry (as my Minnesota relatives called him.)
I have never respected a dad who would turn down any play with son or daughter so he could watch “the game”. It is not acceptable for grampa just because he’s watching/listening to “champagne music.”
geneking: It wasn’t a prediction so much as a joke – on all of us, topped only by his ultimate deification. I don’t recall any other News of the Future jokes to actually happen, at least not to that degree of tragedy. Reaganhood economics still kills.
Laugh-In would no more be permitted on corporate media today than the Smothers Brothers, or, on more serious subjects, any mention of the Green Party or Bernie Sanders’ party affiliation. There are some things the multinational corporations don’t want you to know about.
Absolutely HATED Lawrence Welk. My dad would change the channel right in front of us without a word when LW came on. BTW, I’m 62 and my parents would be over 100, so you’ve got to be 80+ to like that stuff….I’m a Beatles fan.
I used to watch Lawrence Welk and Mitch Miller with my mother, not so much because I liked them, but because I liked my mother. Watching their shows exposed me to a lot of music I wouldn’t have heard otherwise. I’m living proof that someone can enjoy ♪ ♫ Come away with me, Lucille, in my merry Oldsmobile…♪ ♫ and ♪ ♫ Lucy in the sky with diamonds… ♪ ♫
Couldn’t help but to reply to you kiddo.~I’m way past “plugger” status, and I like shows from “Big Bang Theory” to "Stolen Voices!!~You really should speak only for you like!
Welk came along about the peak of my “life in the pits” show biz career. Most professional musicians were impressed with his innovative use of such instruments as alto flute and bassoon in the traditional swing band instrumentation, but soon got sick of the fact that there was nothing else there.
Miller, on the other hand, was both a classically trained oboist and the head of a major record company’s A&R department (responsible among others for Rosemary Clooney’s Come Onna My House). While having a distinctive sound, he was never in a rut for it. I am still trying to get a copy of his arrangement of Paul Anka’s The Longest Day (performed over the credits at the end of the movie of the same name). The Paris (TX) Municipal Band has been wanting to play it since we had audience members who were there at the scene.
I don’t know what to say about a grandparent preferring to watch an old Lawrence Welk re-run over spending quality time with their grandchild. Pretty sad.
My mom and LOVED Lawrence Welk, esp. my mom but when their grandkids came along, on a Sat night when it was on PBS, their grandsons ALWAYS came first! And what deeceewye said, Yes I learned to appreciate a wide range of music from Benny Goodman to Coldplay, etc Kind of liked Lawrence Welk but would I watch him now? NO. My memories are of how much my mom enjoyed it, even when she in the hospital, she had to see Lawrence Welk, she died at 89 and daddy died at 94.
