I’ve looked in various Andy Capp books but I can see no drawings of Andy or Flo’s mothers. The earliest book I have is No. 20, so it’s later stuff drawn in the style we see today.
The BCA has over 3000 Andy strips that have not been digitized and so are not available for our use. I have contacted them about when these might become available, and the answer was that it depended on funding and demand. Maybe if we loyal Cappers all contacted the BCA and asked for the archived strips to be processed , it would inspire them to fill our desperate need. They can be contacted Here.
Flo’s mother, a character not shown whose dialog appears from offstage, often chimes into the conversation, mostly with sarcastic criticism of her son-in-law. Flo’s “mum”, whom Andy addresses only as “Missus”, is often the subject of Andy’s pointed barbs about her weight and less-than-sunny disposition, but she has been known to give as good as she gets. Andy’s mother was similarly mentioned and also delivered dialogue from offstage, but her “appearances” were cut back significantly as the years went on. Andy’s father has also been mentioned. Flo has an older sister named Polly, who is never seen. .
I finished searching through all of my Andy Capp books, which range from the fairly early ones with the more “elongated” Andy and Flo to the more classic style, and never found one picture of either parent. One thing about Andy’s father, though: In one strip Flo tells Andy “Yer’ve never cared about anybody but yerself.” Andy turns to the reader and muses, “I did, yer know. I miss me grandmother—she used to stop me father thumping me.” This could explain a lot! (And in another one, Andy calls for another round, but Jackie rushes to serve somebody else—off-panel. Then he says to Andy “Only another Capp can get served faster than you.” The off-panel voice “Yer got a problem with that?” Andy, “No, Mum.” This could also explain a lot!)
To be honest, anywhere outside London, life is going on much as normal.outside the media luvvies in the capital who are bigging it up on TV and in the papers, there’s a sort of feeling that the Olympics is London’s expensive folly and not a lot to do with the rest of us (although our taxes are paying the nine billion quid cost) .
In Manchester, (200 miles north of London) there’s no special effort being made, apart from feeling quietly proud whenever a Brit wins a gold medal (especially if the Germans come second.) we’re realistic, we know there’s no chance of getting into the superpower league alongside America and China, but if we can get more golds than Germany and bloody France, we will be quietly happy.
Andy Capp is in Newcastle, another 150 miles further away from the capital, and I’d guess the “so what, it’s all happening in London, bugger all to do with us” feeling is stronger there.
Great Britain – so far all our gold medals have been won sitting down (sailing and cycling) or just standing still (shooting). It takes class for that…
Happy Belated Birthday wishes to SreeJay, Number 2, Afficianado, and PColli!! So much to catch up on! Boy, spend a couple of days in the hospital and just watch what happens when you get back on line….sheesh…((((((( Hugs for all you wonderful Cappers )))))))
“I noticed Scot Sir Chris Hoy was understandably tight lipped, receiving Gold during ‘God Save The Queen’!"there is a point of view that says that if Scotland is going for independence, “Great Britain” will be no more at the Olympics and should devolve into four smaller teams – England, Wales, Scotland and the top right-hand corner of Ireland. As Queen Elizabeth The Second of England is also the legitimate Queen Elizabeth of Scotland (Scotland never had a Queen Elizabeth the First) then Sir Chris would keep his sir-hood, he would represent Scotland, and everyone would be happy.

I was wondering when Andy would finally acknowledge what’s going on in his own country!

I’ve got some of the older books – I’ll post the numbers if I remember to look. I don’t recall either mum being shown

Giles, on the other hand, would periodically show the “Auntie Grandmas”

LOL LOL. This strip made me laugh.
I definitely don’t fit into the ‘sporty’ category.
Although I was famous for my handstands at primary school.
When I try and do them now, I end up gasping for breath.

Ooops! Sorry.
I have just listened to that song. It’s beautiful. Were the images in the video from WW2?
They’re really nice.
Thank you.

I’m glad my Andy classic yesterday reminded you of your super-cool-sounding Uncle Jim.
I don’t just post the classics for the humour. I post them for the memories too.
I hope you’re doing good!

Nice to see a strip that ties in with the olympics, since it was probably drawn about two months ago.
