Technically, in most of the US and Canada this would work. The satellite dishes are all oriented to face the communication satellites in geo-stationary orbit over Texas.

Although probably not accurate it doesn’t matter. This cartoon is intended to be a criticism of how the deforestation has affected life, (like the joke about the dogs lining up to pee on the tree), it used to be moss grows on the northside of the tree, but now satelites have replaced the trees. At least that is the way that I see it. :)

Unreliable means of finding North (regardless of which side of the equator you are on) …
