I guess I must be even older than that – WE called it the FIVE and TEN CENT store! That was back in the days when even a fountain Coke was only a nickel and a comic book was ten cents! And the MANUAL typewriters all had a cents sign already on them! I can even remember that the reason Motel 6 was called Motel 6 was because a family of four could stay overnight for only $6 and the rooms included free working television sets, working phones, working hot and cold water taps in the bathroom and flush toilets! In fact, in the summer time, if you were vacationing near some tourist traps, you might even find a Motel 6 or two which included a dip in the motel’s pool included in the $6 per night price of a room! Motel 8 was “uptown stuff” for the swells! It took an entire $8 per night for a family of four to get the ritz treatment at a Motel 8. The reason for that was because, every now and then, some of the rooms in the Motel 8 would have color television sets!

Pluggers put the dime store out of business with trips to Walmart and Sam’s Club.

Yeah, I’m NOT a Plugger! I say Dollar Store! Yippe! Happy Dance!
(of course, I do remember the 5 and dime stores. Woolworths, GC Murphy, McCrory’s).

You forgot Kresge’s 5 and 10 (which later became K-Mart).
