Seems odd Opal didn’t say “your Dad” instead of “Earl.”
Ashburn…. often the deceased has previously expressed a desire, or the family feels that he or she would have preferred, to be remembered in the prime of life….My father died at 90… most of the people who knew him in THIS century met him in an Alzheimer’s residence, when he was only a shell of what he had been… For his memorial we chose a WWII era photo we knew he liked and identified with.
I noticed myself when my mom talks about my dad, who is gone, she refers to her dad. Lives life in the past a lot more. She is 87. She does not like her picture taken.
Some folks that are ill just don’t want a recent photo of them in their obit. They want one that was a good shot of when they were healthier. My uncle passed away this year & I would have never recognized him by the photo his family used. I have a few at my home taken about 12 years ago that looked a whole lot better & even his family agrees with that. An added note… his family never took photos so they only had this one of him taken a year before his death.
“we shall pass this way on earth but once, If there is any Kindness we can show, or a good act we can do, let us do it Now, For we will never pass this way again.”
Here is my photography blog where I discussed he need for photos and the need for camera shy people to let people take photographs. The next post involves photographers photographing funerals. http://www.hldphotos.blogspot.com/2012/07/photography-and-funeral-part-1-family.html
Susan Sunshine: Valid point, but there is another factor in our ageist society – we are so disconnected from face-to-face contacts, most people who know the deceased would not recognize a recent picture, but would one of the way they looked back when there was personal contact. The same applies to many movie stars and similar retired celebrities.

sorry, but there is nothing numerous in today’s comic, some one pre-occupied with his own death is not funny.

As long as the obit photo they use isn’t a mug shot, I don’t care.

When my husband died we had a terrible time finding a good photo. Best to have one on hand ready to go I think!

The one that amazed me was the obit photo that had “TEXAS TEXAS…” overlaid in a diagonal across the picture. From his DRIVER"S LICENSE!
But if someone was willing to do that, it made me wonder when I’d see a booking photo.

Earl should get his son-in-law to take the ONE picture.
