Might be the start of the coat of many colors. If Joe was sleazing around and leaving the capes he might end up with scraps of cloth and had to stitch one together from the remnants.
Interesting that when Jesus was arrested, John also ran away from the Roman soldiers, leaving his garment behind. I think it was John; one of the disciples, anyway.
