School should be a time of learning, wonder and social activity. [Someone once said that it could be as diverse as magazines on a news stand.] But public schools function more as taxpayer-funded babysitting, laden with bureaucracy and one-size-fits all curriculum. Little or no competition with incentives to provide creative education. It makes good fodder for comic strips though.
We had strikes in our schools when I was a kid. We didn’t get out of school one year until June 15th. They took Christmas vacation from us so we wouldn’t have gone so long in the summer.
Ironically, every school that I attended (I’m 80) has been torn down or replaced, however the one-room school houses that my parents attended still stand.

Yeah, that’s pretty much how it was for me as a kid, too.

When I was a kid, school started the day after Labor Day and was out by the end of May.
