Lola: whoa, leis...thats just bizarre.
I call it "earth moon and a spatula"
I was stuck by inspiration
Lola; why -huh
Lola: and would this "inspiration" need stashed if the police stopped by?
I agree with Penny…the cartoonist must be from Pittsburgh or nearby. I have lived from Texas to New England and the Pittsburgh area is the only place I’ve ever heard the dropping of “to be” (My essay needs typed; the house needs cleaned; my kids need bathed, etc.)
Okay, here’s the deal. I was an Air Force brat. Name a state…I’ve lived there. Not sure where I picked up this particular verbage, but I apologize if it’s causing stress throughout the comics page. As always, thanks for reading!
From the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Edition:
Regional Note: When need is used as the main verb, it can be followed by a present participle, as in The car needs washing, or by to be plus a past participle, as in The car needs to be washed. However, in some areas of the United States, especially western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, many speakers omit to be and use just the past participle form, as in The car needs washed. This use of need with past participles is slightly more common in the British Isles, being particularly prevalent in Scotland.
(I lean toward the idea it stems from German grammar, like some other Pennsylvania idiosyncrasies.)

“need stashed”? need stashing maybe, or to be stashed, but the funny is lost when my brain goes “wait, what?”

The world would be a happier place if we all had daily inspiration.

Parts of the South I believe, or it may have just been contagion from military moving about. It doesn’t bother my ear I hear it as an ellipsis.

I’m from Ohio I got it right away, surprised so many people on here questioned the wording. Anyway, I thought it was hilarious. :)

I’m from Iowa and thought that was the right way to say it. I too got it right away and found it hilarious
