Gladys: Time to get up, Wilberforce! You don't want to be late for the first day of school!
Wilberforce: Summer vacation is over already?
Gladys: Already? It's been three LOOONG months!
He could always shorten it to Wilbur or Willy.@truecanadianliberalWhere have you been? It’s been that way for several years when my kids were in school. Me, when I was a kid, it started the day after Labor Day and ended the last week day in June. We had two whole summer months off.And some stupid study says that kids lose all that learning during the summer months. Really? I never did. I don’t believe in any of that garbage. The only problem I can see is if they were conducting tests on the kids, they picked the ones that were doing badly in class and never paid attention, did their homework and their parents didn’t do their part to make sure they did.
He could call himself Wilbur or Willy, but you know how teachers are – they insist on saying your full name. All they have to do is say it once and everyone knows.
As I understand it, schools in North Carolina used to start in mid-August, then shut down for two weeks in October so the students could help pick cotton on the family farms. Of course, they aren’t needed for that any more, but tradition carries on. they now get “spring breaks” and other time off that wouldn’t be dreamed of in other times and places where the children were needed on the farm during the summer.
