My cousin(who is 10 years younger), got through the public school system by reading “abridged young-adult” editions and comic book editions of the books he was assigned to read by his teachers. You know the ones – they took “Tom Sawyer” and made it into a little square book with about 100 pages … " Frankenstein" was a comic book series – all of 5 comic books. The public school system is a “feel good” system teaching zilch.
We did have a College history teacher who spoke of the “Modren” era—and an English teacher with an outrageous Hungarian accent (he came to the West in 1956 as a young adult) but they were both good teachers and very intelligent men.

For a comic called ‘Off the Mark,’ this one is actually pretty much dead-on the mark.

It’s the schools’ and the system’s fault, they haven’t kept up with the rapid developments in English Language Variations and Change.
