It’s not that they’re afraid per se.[]Cats have incredibly sensitive hearing, and vacuum cleaners are so loud – and at such a high pitch – that it hurts their ears.
We went to bed one night and left the vacuum plugged in. My scaredy-cat, who is terrified of the vac, must have decided to face her fears because the vac suddenly started up in the middle of the night. Scared US! She evidently smacked the on/off rocker switch and turned it on.
My cats dive under the living room sofa when I start up our vacuum. Even if they are upstairs, they stampede down the stairs sometimes jumping from top to bottom (6 steps) and dive under!
My oldest cat used to sit on her toys and swat at the vacuum. I once sucked up one of her little fur mice by accident and she spent years protecting the rest of her toys from the noise monster.

My cat gets both angry and scared. He’ll stalk it, charge in, swipe with his claws, and then run away again.

Our dachshund Angel barks at the vacuum even when it’s standing quietly in the closet.

When my roomba is making the round, my cat will just continue to lay, sit there and let the thing bounce off him. No fear, just indifference.
