I remember what my step dad told my mom after the first time I said “I hate you” to her (roughly 13 yo). “If I had a dime for all the times my girls said that to me…I’d never need to work another day in my life.” I got called back to the kitchen and was told that we use “I love you but don’t like you right now” from that day forward.
