They sure know they are guilty. My husband’s Dachshund had left his “mark” in the kitchen. I don’t know when he did it, but when I called him while standing near it, he came happily over to see me but stopped midway when he realized where I was standing. He dropped his tail and ears, then turned to my husband to try to hide behind him. He hasn’t done it since.
Our cat knew she wasn’t supposed to get up on the mantlepiece and tried to hide until we left for the day. Spotted her shadow and pulled her down and gave her a whack with a newspaper. Never went up there again.
