When I rode my bicycle, I always wore my helmet. But when I see helmetless cyclists…

Today’s kids are far less likely to be evaporated in a nuclear war. And they’re far less likely to get drafted into a non-nuclear one. All in all, I’d say that makes them safer.

But pederasts roam the streets these days, looking to drag young children into cars or vans. Didn’t have that in the 50’s when I was young. Kidnap, rape and murder a child? You were executed in the electric chair in less than 5 years, IF the police allowed you to surrender. Mom would send me out to play in the local park in the summer and I was not expected to come home before lunch, then supper, then when the street lights came on – unless I needed a band-aid or it rained. No problems.

There isn’t more crime now- it’s just that whatever happens gets reported on our 24/7 news media. We hear about each event over and over…

Stranger danger is overblown, much more likely a child will be assaulted by a family member or friend of a family. There are organizations with higher incidents of assaults on children than the Catholic church, but once the meme is established why bother looking up actual facts.

Not to say that assaults from either source don’t happen, they do, but not with the frequency they are attributed by some.

Bike helmets make sense at high speeds, grad school kids don’t need them.

I didn’t wear a helmet as a kid, but when I was riding my bike on the neighborhood streets, there weren’t nearly as many cars around. Back then, most families had only one car and it was parked in the driveway, if it was home at all. Now, there are multiple cars in the drive and on the street. Most days, they are parked on both sides of the street. If another car is coming, someone has to pull to the side to make room.
