Sorry, Amazon. Nothin’ beats walking into a bookstore and browsing the shelves looking for that hidden gem. Going into a bookstore also allows social interaction between customers who happen to meet while looking for the newest M.C. Beaton, or Terry Pratchett. And, a kindle can’t autograph a much loved copy by your favorite author. Keep the Kindle, I’ll take the gift certificate.
I was curious about these things, not just because of the strip, but because a friend of mine told me that she had found out that her boyfriend was giving her a similar item made by a different company….
So I looked them up and wow! Are they ever expensive!
Yeah, I find it hard to believe Kindle and its ilk will ever replace books. Not as long as bookbinding is still an art form. I don’t see photographs replacing paintings, for instance.
I agree, Bill! I love my computer & cell phone, but I hate reading e-books, even though I love to read. There just is something satisfying about a book printed on paper that electronic media can’t reproduce. I don’t mind textbooks & encyclopedias on the computer, but for one of those curl up in a cozy chair and read type of books, give me the paper variety! (Especially when I think about saving it for the next generation or two to read.)
Actually, as technology increases, and flat screens that can be rolled up and store data are mass produced, moving videos and pictures will be the norm for electronic newspapers.
It’s 11-29-2022 as I write this comment, and now, reading over the past comments, can see that so much has changed… not all for better, but I’d rather have a book or a paper any day

if it can be read, i prefer actual books.
those electronic devices are known to fail and batteries do die so then you are left to search and scratch to recover what you were reading
but then again, i am one of those people who just got my first cell phone 2 years ago

I buy a book, read it, and then give it to a friend. It’s perfectly legal. Not so with Kindle.
Or I buy a book, start to read it, and then throw it across the room. It’s deeply satisfying. Not wise with Kindle.

I spend all day at the computer. It’s nice to go offline afterwards and read a real book.
