One of the most important issues is about adoption. If you live in a state where you cannot adopt children unless you are married, even civil unions will do you no good. This is sad what with all of the orphans and otherwise abandoned children who are doomed to be thrown out on the street when they come of age. Hoosexuals don’t abuse kids any more than heterosexuals do, and deserve to have the opportunity to be loving parents for these lost kids.
Back in the 18th century, Samuel Johnson called a second marriage, “The triumph of hope over experience.” For me, my second marriage has been a big success. Sixteen years together, eleven of them married, and going strong. And I’m even on good, even friendly, terms with my first wife. In my state, the GOP got through an amendment to the state constitution banned same-sex marriage, which would be bad enough, but I suspect most voters didn’t think much beyond that. For the amendment also bans civil unions, partnerships, or anything analogous to marriage in any way, the state refusing to recognize any rights or claims based on any relationship other than legal marriage. If the amendment were taken seriously, and enforce consistently, it would eliminate “palimony” and undercut the rights of many heterosexual but unmarried couples. But of course it won’t be enforced except to deny gay couples legal rights.
Whatever the failed relationship – straight or gay – the fight over the division of property is ubiquitous and sometime iniquitous . Many property disputes are exacerbated by divorce attorneys. Even family pets can be a source of bitter argument .I once acquired an incredibly wonderful St. Bernard dog as a result of a custody dispute between the two divorcing owners. As a severely wounded veteran of the divorce and separation wars, myself , ( several tours of domestic combat ), my advice to guys is to just give them the house and a car ahead of time, and save the grief and aggravation later !
So, the state of VT allows anyone, straight or gay, to enter the state and marry, but in order to divorce you must be a resident. I am going to assume that not all of the gay couples who went to marry in VT are currently together. Since those marriages are not legal in other states, they can’t divorce. What if they decide to remarry elsewhere? And what happens when those marriages are legal nationally?
The GOP is just as much into wealth redistribution. They just want the rich to have more and the middle and working class to have even less. Also, every tax and tariff is always about redistribution. No one likes to pay taxes but we would all lose if we didn’t have decent roads, emergency services, etc. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, taxes are the price of civilization. I would like to see the GOP start their own state without taxes, especially federal taxes. How long do you really think that would last?
Never seen a presidential candidate whose sole focus is money and paying as little tax personslly as R-money. I’m sure when he loses, he’ll take every cent of that charitable deduction he cancelledto get a refund. Maybe he should have stayed out of politics to become a billionaire…
As I say to all my gay friends — be careful what you ask for — divorce is a bummer. And the custody battles are the worst — joint custody is not what it is cooked up to be. (No, I’m not a bitter ex with kids, but I’ve seen plenty of it as a therapist).
I don’t even believe in that divorce law: Why if you get a divorce should the spouse get half of YOUR things that they didn’t even pay for or earn. I don’t even believe in Alimony: Why if you don’t even have any kids should you have to pay money I EARN AND YOU DON’T to you if you divorce.

The only good thing in this debate is that the antique attitudes will fade away as the younger voters, even in very conservative states, take over.

Um. As of 2010, every one of the 50 states allows a single person to adopt.
