What would piss off the burgalar the most is that whatever it is he’s looking for is probably under (or in) the mattress.

I once read an interview with several real B&E specialists. A couple of things they said surprised the hell out of everyone:

Their favorite time to go in? When the family is at dinner - Alarms are off, windows are often wide open, everybody (including and ESPECIALLY the dog) are at the opposite end of the house, and everything the thief wants (wallet, jewelery, etc) is often sitting out where they can just scoop it right up.
