"Did you know that Buddhist monks spend over 10,000 hours of their lives meditating?" "Controlling their breathing, slowing their heart rates and focusing their minds to achieve a higher level of consciousness." "Attaining true enlightenment only when their minds are quiet and they are at peace with the universe." "But what do those monks focus on to get to the point where they transcend their human form and experience life on an ethereal level?" "I think I might know." VRROOOM!! "Ha-haaaa!!" "We gonna do what they say can't be done!!" "They're not thinking about 'Smokey and the Bandit'." "'Cannonball Run'?"
FTR, Buddhist monks traditionally don’t control their breathing. They just observe their breathing without interfering with it. There are assorted schools of Buddhism and I don’t know what each of them teaches, but the sutra on breathing meditation that’s attributed to the Buddha (Anapanasati Sutta) is definitely not about controlling your breath.
