They are friends because — what? Because Kevin is the only one who will talk to the black kid? Otherwise they have nothing in common.

In your average public library it is more likely a shelf or two (tops) rather than a section. But Miles nailed it. And even if they don’t find that one, they should find a ton of easier ones.

Melvil Dewey was an interesting though somewhat loathsome character. He lost his standing due to repeated episodes of ugly sexual harassment toward women, and also was a bigoted anti-Semite. But his classifications live on.

We learned how to use that in grade school, but I’ve never met a librarian who wouldn’t just check if they had what I was looking for. shrug

You still use the Dewey Decimal System? How old fashioned. All the best place use Library of Congress Classification.

(I’m trying to make a nerd joke. I understand that the Dewey Decimal system is better for general libraries, while the Library of Congress Classification is preferred for research libraries.)

We moved when I was in 5th grade in the Summer. A few days later a knock at the door – A curly-haired 10-year-old asked me if we could be friends. Eventually I went off to UTAustin and she went to East Texas Baptist U. My grad school was in Baltimore – she stayed at ETBU. I taught college, moved to California then to Pittsburgh teaching. She taught elementary in home town. We are soooo different. But 65 years later we’re still the very truest best friends.

How does Kevin NOT know about the Dewey Decimal System?! Was he actually banned from the library since the day of his birth?!
