Far be it for me to give a Batiuk comic strip any credit for displaying relevant insight, but I can sort of relate- I am quite glad that I did most of my stupid stuff well before online social media was a thing.
And so the moral of the story is that being dead is the solution to being depressed. I guess that’s funny if you make a cartoon out of it. Still, it left me a little down.
It was discussed in these comments a few day ago – the aphorism that “Once something is on the Internet, it’s there forever” is proving to be less true as time marches on.
Pop Quiz: When is the last time that you were on a webpage that was hosted by any of these domains – Geocities. Xanga. Angelfire. Tripod. Livejournal. Myspace. When is the last time that you were on a webpage that was hosted by a post-secondary educational institution, like a state college or the like. Just imagine all of the content that were on all of those domains and are now gone. 100% gone, with no archive, no trace of anything ever existing. Think of everything that’s ever been posted on Twitter, and how much of it is invisible and unarchived now, and how much more may go missing in the future as long as Musk keeps doing what Musk does.
Think of how many YouTube videos you may have bookmarked ten years ago and no longer are visible now. How many of your web browser bookmarks still work today? When’s the last time you checked?
To ALL of today’s Crankshaft commentators: You are the reason I read this comic on a daily basis, even though I personally find it tediously terrible. Your comments are what I enjoy, even if I don’t agree them (or understand how anyone could possibly enjoy this drivel). Thanks for adding a little enjoyment to a world that’s so upside down. Have a great rest of your day and great weekend! Take care.

We’re all glad for that, too, Pop. Think you can sell Cranky on the idea of joining you? Does being ghastly qualify him for ghosthood?

Everyone knows that ghosts can’t see YouTubes! Oh, it’s a TikTok? Never mind!

The internet is like a spouse who keeps bringing up that idiot thing you did ten years ago.

Maybe Ed dreaming all this and will wake up eventually.

I’m confused. Why all of the hatred for Ed? If you don’t like the strip, don’t read the strip!
