When my mom finally shot the groundhog that had been ravaging her garden, one of the neighbor kids asked if he could have its gizzard for stew. Now that was one mixed up kid.
About 20-25 years ago one of our radio stations ran a contest from sometime in January until February 2 in which the lucky caller would guess whether the ground hog saw his shadow. You’d hear an alarm clock, the groundhog cursing at it (in groundhog, of course, then walking up its steps to the den entrance. I forget what they played if it saw its shadow, but if it didn’t there’d be a line of Beach Boys. The prize was a large supply of pork sausage.

Oh, Peter Otterloop, Jr., you sneaky brother (I liked the father’s Groundhog Day tradition in yesterday’s “La Cucaracha” better).

Petey is being a real (not nice) big brother, teasing Alice with his phony holiday facts! Not nice, but more normal than usual for Petey….

Actually, in my family it’s the day we have ham salad sandwiches for lunch.

Someone should start a tradition of eating pork burgers on Groundhog’s Day. Because it’s made from ground hog.

Great idea! Serve some sort of meat you don’t eat very often and call it ground hog. Will have to wait a whole year now. :(

Perhaps not a real tradition, but it should be! Sounds absolutely Punxsutawney Fill-ing…

I made sure we had pork sausage for breakfast yesterday, mixed into scrambled eggs (my favorite breakfast dish since childhood).
