Alice: Petey, what is this box of cereal about? Petey: Well, let's see. It's about a frog wearing a baseball cap.... Petey: and he's got a skateboard. Petey: He skateboards all over looking for this brand of cereal. Petey: When he finds some, he goes nuts and eats it all. This cheers him up, helps him excel at school and keeps him relatively sane. Alice: Ha ha! That was great! What's that box of cereal about? Petey: That's Mom and Dad's cereal. Petey: It's mostly about digestion. Petey: There's a bit about riding a horse at the beach. I'mont sure why. Alice: The frog is better! Children's literature is more compelling than the adult stuff. Petey: With a little more angst, the frog would make a great graphic novel!
Well, boy, when you grow up, you’ll understand that the commercial world uses metaphors a lot. For instance, riding a horse along the beach is sex. (If it’a a white horse it means you have a good brand of tampon.) Dancing – that’s sex, too. Side by side bathtubs – sex again. This makes it almost impossible to design a commercial for beach horse rentals, dancing lessons or matching bathtubs.
