This time I’m happy to tell you that, a little over 10 years ago, Richard posted a blog entry about this and the prior strip:

Not sure what its Arena Stage link showed at that time in 2011. Hard to believe it’s already 5 years since his passing (7/27/16).
in a nutshell, the kids got it
During our school play I fell off the stage. At least I got a big laugh.
Such lucky parents! Time to afix bogus smiley face & tell Mz. Bliss “Great Job!”
Sometimes Alice is able to cut through the bs and get to the point, but other times…
Way to synopsize, Alice…
Hm… none of them have stage fright yet
In a nutshell, yes Alice.
Dang it!! If she’d had just said “pedagogy” too I’d have had a winner on my buzzword bingo card…
I sense the impending entrance of one Timmy Fretwork.
they should do ‘thelma and louise’ starring Alice and Sofie
Les Misérables?
Why didn’t the camp counselor just say that?
Don’t eat the glue Kevin !
Richard was so good…
“Allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.”
“So what do we do?”
“Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.”
“How?”
“I don’t know. It’s a mystery.”
(Shakespeare In Love)
Stagecraft and Dramaturgy love it!
No offense to actual teachers, but “educators” can take the joy out of seeing unicorns jumping over rainbows.
So, we know Alice can speak Bliss… but does she know jive?
“I know, Judy, we can put on a Musical!!”
“Oh Mickey, do you think we can?”
Miss Bliss sounds like a college catalogue! But the kids, Alice, Sofie, Dill, Kevin the Bucket Head, and Marcus understand what she’s really trying to say!
