I prefer having things that are more clearly a face/expression Skype has its own set, FB has very few, GoComics allows the tech-savvy to use some that are fancy, because I wonder when using ;-P or ;-D if some may think it’s part of a word. The pumpkin is cute and funny tho’. If I were doing a big Halloween I might get one just to do that.

I think they are helpful for showing jokes or sarcasm. Its too easy to take things in the wrong context without hearing the voice.

you need them when you’re writing rather than speaking. Lots of times people get the wrong mood out of a sentence without the :-D
