    Yes, but nothing as inedible as soap, or wax fruit…

    For instance, someone once gave me the most horrible-tasting chocolate Easter bunny ever… I couldn’t swallow even one bite.She later said it was carob.She’d unwrapped it so I wouldn’t refuse it, and I’d see how good it was.

    It wasn’t.Same with the Postum I was told was coffee…. YUCK.Not only that, there was no real coffee in the house, though I’d asked before I came so I could bring some.They’d assumed Postum would suffice.

    Similarly, but much more recently, I was handed a hot dog at a picnic…for a few seconds I thought it was meat…but it was strangely soft and squishy….and I suddenly felt compelled to get it off my plate immediately. I told my host, and she said “Oh, they’re vegan.”

    There is some perfectly good, ordinary food that happens to be vegan…. why make a horrible imitation of a hotdog?

    As a 16-year-old coming home from my part-time job one night, I found that my mother left steak and biscuits in the refrigerator. As it happens, the steak was liver.

    I remember as a child in the ’60’s seeing an obviously homeless person buying dogfood. [….] My mom told me he was probably buying it to eat because that was all he could afford. (Do people still do that?) That was before generic labeled food and/or homeless kitchens and shelters as abundantly as we recognize them today.

    The first generic brands where in white labeled cans and boxes. Still made by major manufacturers but they didn’t want to compete with themselves. They did that through the 80’s. People were a little less inclined to buy them because it “said” something about you at the checkout counter.Now a lot of cheaper brands are better than the brand names.

    We drank Postum at home when I was growing up. Coffee was severely rationed during the war, and Postum has no caffeine, so kids could drink it and think they were oh, so grown up. However, once I tasted real coffee I stopped putting cream and sugar in it.

    No because I’ve always been weird about food. I did have a bad experience with a drink once. I can only tolerate certain types of alcohol. In my late teens, we went to a roadside carnival, where we met a few friends and got in line for the tilt-o-whirl. I was really thirsty and my friend offered me a drink of her soda. I was sucking in the 2nd gulp when I realized it was Jack and Coke, so I spit it out. The guys thought it would be fun to spin the car thing soooo fast that I couldn’t keep my head in an upright position. All I could do is turn my head and that was it. Wish I could say I’ve never been more embarrassed, but that wouldn’t be true.

    as a kid, my mother concocted a delicious dessert which used a reddish brown spice. my brother and i never found it but cayenne pepper looked just like it.

    I like calamari tentacles fried, but never liked the rings. My X like it cooked in rice.

    @Tony, I myself have not eaten anything before knowing what it is, but my X when visiting my parents years ago, ate some of the little pieces of cat food from a bowl in the TV room. No accounting for taste.

    Oh yeah. Forgot about the time I took a huge swallow of what I thought was grape Kool-Aid, but it was my grandmother’s prune juice.

    Lassie … and others…. some things can taste good to you if you put them in your mouth on purpose…. but horrible if you’re expecting it to be something else…

    I had something with carob that was sort of OK, cos the fruity taste blended with the other ingredients…but if you expect chocolate, a carob bunny seems to have a sickly sweet, fruity aroma, and taste like tropical fruit (which it is.)

    Postum might be OK-ish when you’re not desperate for the familiar wake-up taste of your usual morning coffee.

    I’ve had vegetarian hot-dogs that were not good but edible…… and I actually love Gardenburgers…but there was NO excuse for that pale, squishy, thing that tasted like a soft wet bag of soy flour and…. I dunno what..

    Bev…. Postum was made by Post cereals, from roasted grain…it wasn’t available for years, but I heard that another company makes it now…. might be different,
