Tigressy…. Beyond my authority….I just volunteer to help the vendor, and he pays me in produce. We do allow sampling anyway… but not by the handful. And good will is important….the supermarket is far cheaper, so in spite of the obviously better produce, we still try hard to keep our market more fun.
He just grits his teeth…and doesn’t give those customers a deal, a free zucchini, or even the few cents off we might offer otherwise…it doesn’t cover the loss, but I think it makes him feel better… LOL.Usually if someone’s total is say, $6.43 on the scale (you punch in the price per pound as you weigh something) we’ll say “Six and a quarter” or if we have lots, even “Let’s call it six dollars.”
If I hear him say “That’ll be $6.43,” I know he saw them munching, or they were annoying.Me, I’ve done so much retail in my life, I can shrug off a lot….I’m protective of these tomatoes for the farmer, not for me.I know it’s hard to make any money growing vegetables these days.
