Tonight’s the night. I see the objects waiting for me. I start immediately, putting them in their rightful places. I move one, then two, then three, before I pause. I have all these figments up in the air, poised to come down. I take a deep breath….
And cast my hand down.
There is a crash. The room starts rumbling. Suddenly, the walls and floor fall away. I am floating in an endless sky. I have solved the puzzle. I look left and right. Nothing. I blink a few times, and suddenly there are hazy spheres filling my view. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them. Dreams. I look into one of them, and see my mother pushing me in a pram. Another shows me falling down stairs for a split second. I take my time to explore these memories. Silvery strands connect the spheres, showing references between dreams. I smile. This is my sort of thing. I wonder why this is happening. Have I unlocked my subconscious, can I now control these dreams? I think harder. Suddenly, the spheres start falling. I fall with them, down, down into a bottomless void…
And wake up.
I sit up in my bed. There is no sign that anything happened. I slowly get up and stand in the room, in the exact same spot. I wonder if I will be able to go back to that place. If so, what a time I’ll have.
