in rural japan it’s customary for everyone in the neighborhood to help out at a funeral, regardless of relationship to the deceased. we briefly lived in a tiny town full of taciturn, unfriendly folks and when the guy next door who’d been rude to us from the minute we moved in died of cancer we just said good riddance and skipped the funeral preparations (and i did a jig). everyone shunned us thereafter, which was a major improvement…
