Actually, the dailies are drawn with the intent that they would be shown in black and white. It’s GoComics foolishness which has showered us with a bunch of brown and brown instead. And if you look at the original black and white of some of the past strips, the difference is amazing. This is how Mr. Staton’s art was intended to be seen, and bravo to GoComics for finally cutting out the foolishness.
???Actually it is the other way around. All of the dailies were drawn in B&W. Go Comics and Comics Kingdom colorists color the strips. Joe never intended for them to be colored. The only day that is colored by the team is Sunday.
OUCH! Tracy had better get that old adrenalin rush and start fighting back, or Morning Gloria will be using his remains for fertilizer! I wonder how Lizz is doing with Mina?
It’s been a while since I’ve seen action like this – where Tracy is in genuine trouble and I genuinely care. The black and white looks much better than the random spatterings of colour we had before.
Don’t rejoice yet. It may just be that the colorist has Labor Day off. (OK, but he/she probably does them a week at a time anyway. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.)
I would be all for B&W weekdays. But I bet today was an experiment or an error. The drawing looks like it was intended to be colored. No shading, which is something the artist is good at.
Whose idea was it to shrink Sunday comics from 12 panels to 8? Whose idea was it to shrink daily strips to the size of postage stamps? Whose idea was it to colorize daily strips? Who ever it was their head should be shrunk in oil!
Black & White is so cool it gets our vote as well. The big girls are now in big trouble. The big mouth is making things worse big time. I know that Dick & Lizz are pros, but the “P” word to a cop has to cut to the core. Calling Sam, calling Joe, calling JR or just some back-up. This strip is so cool … we love it. go team go!!
I must admit, the use of pure B&W is refreshing here, and also it doesn’t distract from the pure carnage shown. If only we could get a pure B&W, w/shadows like in ‘Big Boy’s Open Contract’ or earlier strips it would be perfect.
I tend to agree too; GoComic’s colorization is less than stellar. :\
I like the black ink version fine, but I just checked out the Dick Tracy strip at Comics Kingdom .. its in color and IT LOOKS GREAT !!!!! check it out.
Happy Labor Day! (I guess they gave the colorist the day off.)
I wouldn’t mind color on the dailies if the colorist had a chart from Joe and Shane with little reminders like, “police uniforms are blue, not brown,” etc.
Mr. Noonan,.Re your comment below:.“I guess we been getting spoiled of late. I remember a few months ago when they started to color the weeklys we all cried fowl. Now we want them colored.”.Who’s we? Of 31 comments today about the “colorization or not” question, 20 expressed a definite preference for B&W, 6 for color, and 5 made comments that didn’t make it absolutely clear what their actual opinions were, and must therefore be regarded as neutral..It seems to me the general consensus still appears to be for B&W dailies..And Mr. Night-Gaunt,.Re your response below to questions about your earlier comment:.“I say that [the dailies are not drawn for B&W] because besides being an artist myself I don’t see any of the tell tails of any shading just straight up black or white. Not much detail.”.You’re better qualified to judge things like contrast and shading than I am..However, I can say, with authority, that Joe Staton is on record as stating that he draws the dailies presuming that they will be presented in B&W, and the Sundays presuming that they will be presented in color..So, while B&W dailies might not work for you, they do reflect Joe Staton’s artistic intention.
Yay! Violence! :DIt’ll be great if we can see the strip in B&W here instead of having to go to ComicStripNation.com to see it and then come here for the discussion. Let the colorization monkeys go back to typing Shakespeare! They’re better at that….-Cougar :{)
This strip is identical to what appeared in today’s Chicago Tribune. In black and white. I think there can be no argument…this strip is intended to be b/w. Some more good news…as of today, the Trib is showing Dick Tracy in a slightly larger size. More evidence of a renewed popularity of the strip!!

Yes, black and white on the dailies please.

And also: I am SO HAPPY to be enjoying rather than bemoaning Dick Tracy. What a great team there is on it.

Color would be ok if it is done correctly. So far it hasn’t except on Sunday.

I also vote for B/W!The art is particularly stunning today, by the way!

Coloring detracts from the strip. HEAR THAT GO-COMICS? You would like DT’s readership up, now wouldn’t you? Well, here’s your chance!

Dag nab it, I told myself I’d stop with the Three Dog Night references! But that was 1976, when talk was still cheap.

As much as I’m a purist, I actually got used to the color. And today’s strip is actually hard for me to read, contrast wise.

“Everything looks better in black and white,” Simon and Garfunkel, “Kodachrome.” (I think “better” was “worse” in an earlier version.
Sadly, the next generation of kids won’t even know what Kodachrome is. We’ll have to change the words…
Photosho-o-op…, gives you those nice bright colors,

It would be easy to have a button to switch between color and B&W. That would keep everyone happy. Maybe a bit much to ask from a free site.
