I’ve never heard of Derby Dugan before, but I just came across a review of Derby Dugan’s Depression Funnies that starts out like this:
Readers of today’s newspapers might never guess that, in their heyday, comic strips rivalled movies for their hold on the imagination of the American public. In “Derby Dugan’s Depression Funnies,” Tom DeHaven grandly captures the excitement of the era when such comics as “Little Orphan Annie,” “Dick Tracy” and “Flash Gordon” captivated millions of fans across the country.
Honeymoon is such a serious-minded little sweetheart, in some ways more mature than her years. Her conversation with Sam could almost be part of an entry-interview for the police academy! And it’s very interesting to see that Dethany in VirtuNoir is real and also Derby Dugan! Meanwhile Tracy looks on knowingly as his granddaughter embraces the Family Tradition…. Good old Pop-pop!
I looked up Derby Dugan on Google to try to learn more about the books. One thing I’m not clear on – maybe someone out there can help me- if these are novels, was there an actual comic strip to go with them? Where did that page Any Face put up come from? To me, it looks so very close to Harold Gray’s art, especially the way the Sundays were colored.
Sam’s time running a deli comes from his very first appearance in Dick Tracy back in 1949. When Chief Patton brings him on board and introduces him to Tracy, Sam runs down a list of all the professions he tried before settling into police work full time.
I know Mike Curtis is a big fan of Tom de Haven and has mentioned his three Derby Dugan books a few times. I’ve read them and recommend them to anyone truly interested in comics.
You know, RWM, when a person starts losing credibility, it’s like digging your way out of a hole. It never reverses. And pretty soon, it is the OTHER people in the room who come out with the LOLs before that self-styled commedian opens his mouth.
I was totally unfamiliar with Derby Dugan before today, so I did a little research and spent a few minutes reading this article. http://www.startribune.com/entertainment/books/11380931.html
So Gweedo, what you’re trying to say is that whenever I post someone can’t help but Regurgitate the same old ”STUFF”? I feel bad for them. They should really get treatment for that issue, don’t you think??? LOL!!
Rikki idolizes Abner, Gweedo! If Vitamin and Kandi don’t show up soon, Catchum’s Deli will close for the night and we’ll need to stop at The Bucket of Blood to get a hot meal!
I couldn’t even play a kazoo, Gweedo! Anyway, we decided to grab a bite at Brains to Go. All the Naperville zombies hang out there. It opens at midnight.

Good morning Gweedo and all the other DT fans!
Where oh where are Vitamin and Kandi! I hope they aren’t spooning in the dark auditorium. It’s chilly atop the death coach!

That was the first one I found, Gweedo. There might be.
Seems “Derby Dugan” began as a trilogy by Tom De Haven, who also wrote a novel reimagining Superman in the context of the Great Depression.
Guessing that Mike & Joe are fans.
AnyFace almost 10 years ago
Derby flew under my radar too, Neil. Sounds intriguing.

So Sam ran a deli….interesting….wonder what tale will spring from that little tidbit of information?

Mike & Joe weren’t only plugging Derby Dugan, seems Honeymoon’s gift is the real deal …Dethany in Virtu/Noir For iPad

Vitamin is a bad influence on me, Gweedo. We like to dream fantasies. He is captivated by Kandi as I am by Rikki.

Add my thanks to the list of those now aware of Derby and Dethany. All this time I only knew her from “On the Fast Track”.

I wish the Papers would go back to Series Comics instead of these one a day joke strips
I think the readers tend to have short attention spans these days and don’t have the patience for serial comics.
