If Joe is going to get in trouble for helping Tracy what was the purpose of him going in the first place ? ..Should have been Sam, Lizz or Lee in that car with him.
It’s completely logical that Joe would drive Tracy to the restaurant, switch seats and buckle himself in the passenger seat whilst parked then move over to the driver’s side and drive towards showdown time.
Unless you hit a pedestrian or cause some other collateral damage, I don’t think the Tracytown P.D. is going to care very much. Of course, you could go inside and check on Bonnie (nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more)…
So far anyway, there hasn’t been any good reason for that “I’m here on leave, not officially” bit of dialog, and it has complicated what would otherwise be a very straight forward guest appearance by Joe. If he came officially, there wouldn’t need to be any explanations about who’s driving and who’s sitting in the passenger seat, etc., etc.
1-Ha-rumpf. So Tracy doesn’t like my driving. AND he doesn’t want my help on this Fashion Felony call. He thinks he’s so macho. I hate him I hate him I hate him! 2-Oh who am I fooling? I love the guy – in a normal guy way. I can’t hide it. Why my love practically radiates for the world to see!
Joe sure has a great view of the action, considering he’s sitting on the passenger side of the car, looking out on a dark, rainy, night into a restaurant that doesn’t seem to have any front windows.
There seems to be no cogent reason for Joe to be on the passenger side of the marked patrol car (!), since Collette’s is on the driver side! One would therefore expect him to have a better view of what was going on inside if seated in the driver’s position.
Is the patrol car (!) supposed in panel 2 to be backing up towards a side alley that would be ultimately the only way to get to the street from the back door of Collette’s? There seem to me to be Motion Lines suggesting that….

Good morning™, trouble makers!
I wonder how Joe suddenly ended up on the passenger’s side of the seat.

Strange how they moved him unless he knew he would have to relinquish the driver’s seat if they brought a suspect back with them.
